Q: Who is considered a CFRI Trainee?
A: A CFRI trainee is a full-time graduate student (masters or doctoral), postdoctoral fellow, or clinical fellow who is actively engaged in full-time research under the supervision of a CFRI category 1 or 2 member.

Q: Is registration mandatory for trainees at CFRI?
A: Yes, registration is mandatory for all trainees. This will ensure you are given a profile on the CFRI Training website, have access to regular communications from the Research Education Office, and be eligible for certain funding opportunities.

Q: What types of trainee awards are available from CFRI?
A: CFRI offers several funding opportunities to CFRI trainees. These include Graduate Studentships, Postdoctoral Fellowships, Trainee Travel Grants and Research Methodology Training Grants. For more information visit Funding Opportunities and click on CFRI Funding.

Q: How many awards are given out each year and how are they selected?
A: At present there are 4 Graduate Studentships and 2 Postdoctoral Fellowships awarded each year. Applicants are selected by the CFRI Research Awards Committee, made up of members from each of the research areas in the institute.
The number of Trainee Travel Grants varies, with approximately 17 grants awarded each year. The Trainee Travel Grant applications are entered into a draw and on average 4 are selected at each competition.
A limited number of Research Methodology Training Grants are awarded each year and are selected by the Chair of the Research Awards Committee.

Summer Student Research Program
Q: How do I find a supervisor?
A: It is up to the applicant to find and arrange a supervisor. We do not find supervisors for the students. Search our researcher database on our website to find a supervisor in the field you would like to study.

A: Unfortunately, students not returning to undergraduate or medical studies in the following fall/winter semester are not eligible to apply to the program.

Q: My university’s semester ends later than other universities. Will I have enough time to participate?
A: The Summer Student Research Program runs from mid-May through to the end of August. It does not matter when you start your project and many students have start dates that stagger between May and June. Students will be funded for a minimum of 8 weeks to a maximum of 12 weeks; therefore calculate at least 8-10 weeks to do a research project with an end date of August 31st.

Q: What is the program schedule for summer students?
A: All students participating in the CFRI SSRP must attend the seminars held on Tuesdays and Thursdays during June and July. The Tuesday seminars take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and the Thursday seminars take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. In addition, students participate in a Poster Day that occurs on the last Thursday in July from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Q: Do I have to attend all the seminars?
A: Yes, all students accepted into the CFRI Summer Student Research Program are required to attend seminars on both days and participate in the Poster Day. Students funded by CFRI who are not in regular attendance may have their funding revoked.

Q: Is the CFRI’s Sumer Student Research Program associated with the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Summer Student Research Program?
A: No, the CFRI Summer Student Research Program and the UBC Summer Student Research Program are two separate programs. If you have applied to both programs, and received funding from the UBC SSRP, you must accept the UBC award. Further information regarding the UBC program can be found on the Faculty of Medicine website.

Q: Can I participate in the Summer Student Research Program if I do not work on the CFRI site?
A: Yes, students may participate in the Research Education Program. Visit the website for the External Summer Student application form. However, students with funding from CFRI must be supervised by a researcher on the CFRI site and therefore must be on the CFRI site to participate in the program.

Q: When is the application due?
A: The application deadline is fixed to March 15th of every year. If this date falls on a weekend, the application is due the following Monday by 4.30pm.

Q: The application said to include original transcripts for the last two years. I am in my second year and my semester grades are not out yet. Can my application include my high school transcripts to meet the ‘last two years’ requirement?
A: Yes, include your first year undergraduate transcript AND your high school transcript.

Q: Do the transcripts need to be originals?
A: Yes, only original transcripts or certified copies will be accepted. Photocopied, faxed or grade printouts will not be accepted. Transcripts also need to be signed by your CFRI supervisor.

Q: The application indicates that the project registration will need to be approved by the Supervisors’ Department Head. How do I get the Department Head’s approval?
A: The application form needs to be signed by the student, the Supervisor, and finally, the Department Head. It is the responsibility of your supervisor to get their Department Head’s signature.

Q: A note on the application says we can not receive other sources of funding. What does this mean?
A: The student is not able to receive funding from another institute or university for the same type of training opportunity because the studentship requires the student to work full time for the duration of the project.
You may be able to hold a second job as long as it does not occur during the day, when you are required to work on your project.

Q: How many students are funded each year and how are they selected?
A: There are approximately 20 awards given each year. The scores are based on grades, feasibility of project and the project itself. The likelihood of success depends on the student’s score and how many students apply each year.

Q: How much funding do summer students receive?
A: The amount of funding given depends on:
a) type of student you are – Undergraduate Students receive a maximum of $3,750 for 12 weeks and Medical Students receive a maximum of $4,250 for 12 weeks.
b) length of your stay – students are paid for the weeks they are physically on site working. If you take a week off, you will not be paid for it.

Q: When do we get paid?
