About Mini Med School

The Mini Med School concept was first developed in Colorado in 1990 and has since been fostered by the NIH's Science Education Initiative. There are now Mini Med Schools offered at universities and teaching hospitals worldwide, including our very own at CFRI.

What is the purpose of Mini Med School?

The goals of our series are to:

  • Present knowledge in accessible ways that capture the imagination, motivate further learning and foster public dialogue;
  • Engage members of the public, including highly motivated high school students and the clinical community, in participatory learning and discussion around topics in scientific research;
  • Provide CFRI/UBC health science researchers and research trainees with opportunities to discuss their work, its context and its implications in a public forum

Who attends Mini Med School?
If you have an interest in science and its application to health, Mini Med School could be for you. The typical CFRI Mini Med School audience comprises adult learners (including members of the hospital community) and highly motivated high school students.
  • Reserved seating for selected high school students: Each high school in the City of Vancouver is allotted 2 reserved seats for deserving students. Nomination forms will be available from high school science departments approximately 3 weeks prior to the start of the series each October.

  • Summer scholarships available to work in labs: Students who attend all of the sessions are eligible to compete for a summer scholarship to work in one of the labs of Mini Med School faculty during the school summer break. See our list of previous Summer Studentship Winners.
